چکیده

We report on measurements of the plasmon losses of individual single-wall carbon nanotubes by electron energy-loss spectroscopy in a high-resolution transmission electron microscope. The experimental data are compared to simulated excitation probabilities calculated using the hydrodynamic theory of the interaction between a probe electron and a two-dimensional quasifree electron gas confined on a cylindrical shell. Depending on the nanotube geometry, the firstor the second-order oscillation mode dominates the loss spectrum. The resonance energy of the dominant resonance mode is found to depend on the radius of the nanotube. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1469685#

Collective oscillations in a single-wall carbon nanotube excited by fast electrons

Electron energy loss spectroscopy is a well adapted tool for the investigation of the valence excitations of individual nanometer-size particles. The interpretation of the loss spectra of such small particles, however, relies in most cases on a quantitative comparison with simulated excitation probabilities. Here we present a formalism developed for the interpretation of the energy loss data of...

The Attitude of Variation of Elastic Modules in Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes: Nonlinear Mass-Spring Model

The examination of variation of elastic modules in single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is the aim of this paper. Full nonlinear spring-like elements are employed to simulate specific atomic structures in the commercial code ABAQUS. Carbon atoms are attached to each node as a mass point using atomic mass of carbon atoms. The influence of dimensions such as variation of length, diameter, aspect...

Electron energy-loss spectroscopy studies of single wall carbon nanotubes

We have carried out momentum-dependent measurements of the density response function of bulk samples of purified single wall nanotubes using electron energy-loss spectroscopy. Carbon nanotubes support both excitations between delocalized and localized electronic states. The p-plasmon exhibits significant q-dependence, with a dispersion relation similar to that of the graphite plane, demonstrati...

Ab Initio Study of Chirality Effects Onphonon Spectra, Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Nearly Samediameter Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes

In this paper, we have used density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) and Pseudo-potential method to calculate the phonon spectrum, phonon density of states (DOS), specific heat capacity and mechanical properties of (5,5) armchair and (9,0) zigzag Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNTs). Our calculations show that Young’s modulusfor (5,5) and (9,0) nanotubesare higher than 1TPa. We have also ...

Sulfur Dioxide Internal and External Adsorption on the Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes: DFT Study

Density-functional theory is used to investigate sulfur dioxide physisorption inside and outside of single-wall carbon nanotube of (5,0) and (5,5). This study is conducted at B3LYP/6-31G* level of theory. Sulfur dioxide molecule is studied with axis oriented parallel or perpendicular to the nanotube wall. Both internal and external adsorption on nanotubes is increased with the angle of interact...
